Their forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1) is 45% of the predicted value, assigning an obstruction score of 2. Their perceived breathlessness on the mMRC scale is graded as 2, contributing 2 points. Finally, their 6-minute walk test distance is 320 meters, yielding a score of 2. Summing these values gives a total BODE index of 6 (0 + 2 + 2 + 2 = 6), indicating an intermediate-to-high risk category that warrants a focused management review.

Always use recent spirometry data measured after bronchodilator use to ensure accuracy in the obstruction variable. Ensure the 6-minute walk test is performed on a flat, standardized surface under the supervision of a clinician to prevent injury and capture true functional capacity.
