Alcohol Unit Calculator

An alcohol unit measures the quantity of pure ethanol in a drink. Generally, one unit corresponds to 10 milliliters or 8 grams of pure alcohol. The calculator determines total units by multiplying the beverage volume in milliliters by its Alcohol by Volume (ABV) percentage, dividing the result by 1000 to find the total volume of pure alcohol, and then dividing by 10 (since 1 unit = 10 ml of pure ethanol). The core formula is: Units = (Volume in ml * ABV) / 1000. For instance, a 330ml beer at 5% ABV contains (330 * 0.05) / 10 = 1.65 units of alcohol.

Imagine you enjoy a social evening consisting of two standard beers (each 330ml at 5% ABV) and one large glass of wine (250ml at 12% ABV). Let's calculate your total units step-by-step. First, for the two standard beers: (330 * 0.05 / 10) * 2 = 3.3 units. Next, for the large wine: (250 * 0.12) / 10 = 3.0 units. Summing these together gives a total of 3.3 + 3.0 = 6.3 alcohol units for the evening. This clear breakdown helps you visualize exactly how different drinks contribute to your overall intake.

Always check the label, as craft beers and modern wines often have higher ABVs than traditional benchmarks. Be mindful of generous pour sizes at restaurants, which frequently exceed standard measures. Finally, use this tool consistently over a week to gain a realistic overview of your drinking habits rather than assessing isolated occasions.
