Fielding Percentage Calculator

Fielding percentage measures a fielder's ability to cleanly handle balls in play. The standard formula used in baseball and softball statistics is: Fielding Percentage = (Putouts + Assists) / (Putouts + Assists + Errors). In this equation, putouts represent the number of times a fielder records an out directly, assists signify plays where the fielder contributed to an out made by another teammate, and errors count misplays that allowed a batter or runner to safely advance. The resulting decimal represents the success rate of converting defensive opportunities into outs.

Imagine a shortstop who has an exceptional defensive season. Over the course of the league schedule, the player records 85 putouts and 210 assists, while committing just 12 errors. To find their fielding percentage, we plug these figures into our formula: first, add putouts and assists together (85 + 210 = 295 total successful plays). Next, add errors to that total to find all defensive opportunities (295 + 12 = 307 total chances). Finally, divide the successful plays by total opportunities (295 / 307), which yields a fielding percentage of 0.961, or 96.1%.

When evaluating defensive performance, always look at fielding percentage alongside range factor and total chances. A player with fewer total opportunities might boast a high percentage simply due to cautious play rather than elite range. Additionally, track errors contextually, as scorekeeper biases can sometimes influence how official defensive judgments are recorded across different home and away ballparks.
