Shutter Speed Calculator

At the core of photographic exposure is the relationship between light sensitivity, aperture opening, and shutter duration. This relationship is mathematically expressed using exposure values (EV) and APEX (Additive System of Photographic Exposure) equations. The fundamental formula used by this calculator is: Time Value (t) = (100 * ApertureValue^2) / (ISOvalue * 2^ExposureValue). Here, the aperture value represents the f-number squared, the ISO value scales linearly with sensor light sensitivity, and the exposure value accounts for the overall ambient lighting condition scaled exponentially.

Imagine you are shooting a landscape at dusk. You decide to use an ISO of 400 to maintain low digital noise, and set your lens aperture to f/8 to ensure sharp focus across the entire scene. Based on your handheld light meter reading, your target exposure value is 6. Plugging these numbers into our formula: first, calculate the aperture squared (8^2 = 64), multiply by 100 to get 6,400. Next, calculate the denominator by taking your ISO (400) and multiplying it by 2 raised to the power of your exposure value (2^6 = 64), resulting in 400 * 64 = 25,600. Finally, divide 6,400 by 25,600, which yields a shutter speed of 0.25 seconds (or a reciprocal print of 1/4 second). This tells you to mount your camera on a tripod for a crisp shot.

Always double-check your base ISO setting before calculating shutter speed, as boosting ISO introduces digital grain that cannot always be removed in post-processing. When working with extremely slow shutter speeds calculated by the tool, remember to use a sturdy tripod and a cable release or camera timer to eliminate motion blur from handshakes. If your calculated shutter speed falls between standard camera stops, choose the closest available camera setting and fine-tune your exposure using slight adjustments in aperture or ISO.
