High School GPA Calculator

Your Grade Point Average is calculated by taking the sum of all your grade points earned and dividing it by the total number of credit hours attempted. To find the grade points for a specific class, multiply the numerical value of your letter grade (e.g., A = 4.0) by the credit weight of that course. For weighted GPAs, an extra point or half-point is added for Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), or Honors courses (e.g., an A in an AP class might be worth 5.0 points). The general formula is: GPA = Sum of (Grade Points x Credits) / Sum of Total Credits.

Imagine a student taking four classes in a semester. English 101 is worth 1 credit and they earned an A (4.0 points). Algebra II is worth 1 credit with a B grade (3.0 points). Chemistry is a 1-credit standard course with a C grade (2.0 points). Finally, AP US History is a weighted 1-credit course where they earned an A, giving it a value of 5.0 points. First, calculate the quality points for each class: English (4.0 x 1 = 4.0), Algebra (3.0 x 1 = 3.0), Chemistry (2.0 x 1 = 2.0), and AP History (5.0 x 1 = 5.0). Next, sum these quality points: 4.0 + 3.0 + 2.0 + 5.0 = 14.0 total quality points. Finally, divide by the total number of credits (4 credits): 14.0 / 4 = 3.50. The student's semester GPA is 3.50.

To make the most of your academic tracking, always double-check whether your school uses a 4.0, 5.0, or 100-point grading scale before inputting values. Keep your credit hours accurate, as a lab class worth more credits will impact your overall average more heavily than a half-credit elective. Finally, run projections using future expected grades to see what marks you need on upcoming finals to hit your target cumulative GPA.
