ACT Score Calculator

The ACT composite score is determined by taking the arithmetic average of your four core section scores: English, Mathematics, Reading, and Science. Each of these individual sections is scored on a standardized scale ranging from 1 to 36. The mathematical formula adds the four section scores together and divides the sum by four, rounding the final result to the nearest whole number. If the decimal is .5 or higher, the score rounds up; otherwise, it rounds down.

Expressed mathematically: Composite Score = (English + Math + Reading + Science) / 4.

Imagine a student who takes the ACT and receives the following section scores: an English score of 28, a Math score of 24, a Reading score of 27, and a Science score of 25. To find their final composite score, we apply the calculation steps: First, add all four section scores together: 28 + 24 + 27 + 25 = 104. Second, divide that total sum by the number of sections (4): 104 / 4 = 26. The resulting composite ACT score is 26, which represents a competitive standing for many university admissions offices.

To make the most of your practice tests and final scores, keep these expert strategies in mind: First, remember that raw scores (the total number of correct answers) must be converted into scaled scores (1-36) using official ACT conversion charts before finding your composite average. Second, focus your study time on sections where you have the highest potential for point gains rather than obsessing over a single subject. Finally, always take full-length practice tests under timed conditions to build the endurance required for test day.
