Here, ARPA represents Average Revenue Per Account, churn is the monthly or annual customer attrition rate expressed as a decimal, account expansion measures additional revenue growth from existing users over time, and gross margin accounts for the direct costs of delivering your software service.

Imagine a B2B SaaS startup with an ARPA of $150 per month, a monthly customer churn rate of 5% (0.05), and an average account expansion revenue growth of $20 per month per customer. Assume the company maintains a robust gross margin of 80% (0.80). Plugging these numbers into the equation: first, we calculate the customer lifespan inverse as 1 / 0.05 = 20 months. Next, we factor in the expansion component: $20 * (20 - 1) = $380. Adding this to twice the initial ARPA ($300 + $380 = $680), multiplying by half the lifespan factor (0.5 * 20 = 10), we get $6,800. Finally, multiplying by the 80% gross margin yields a final LTV of $5,440 per customer.

To maximize the insights gained from your LTV calculation, always ensure that your churn and ARPA time horizons match—do not mix monthly churn with annual revenue figures. Furthermore, keep a close eye on your gross margins; high hosting or customer support overhead can severely depress your true net LTV even if top-line revenue looks impressive. Finally, balance your LTV against your Customer Acquisition Cost (CAC), striving for a healthy LTV-to-CAC ratio of at least 3:1 to ensure sustainable long-term growth.
