Net promoter score instantly calculates results using bad respond, good respond, n0. Use the calculator above for instant answers in your browser.

Our Net Promoter Score (NPS) calculator helps businesses instantly evaluate customer loyalty and brand perception by processing survey results on a 0-to-10 scale. Ideal for customer success teams, product managers, and business owners, this tool eliminates manual math errors to reveal your true standing.

How the Net Promoter Score Formula Works

The Net Promoter Score categorizes survey respondents based on their rating from 0 to 10 into three distinct groups: Promoters (scores 9-10), Passives or Neutrals (scores 7-8), and Detractors (scores 0-6). First, the calculator sums all inputs to find the total respondents. It then divides the total number of Promoters by the total respondents to find the promoter percentage, and similarly calculates the detractor percentage. Finally, it subtracts the percentage of detractors from the percentage of promoters and multiplies the result by 100 to yield a final score ranging from -100 to +100.

Worked Calculation Example

Imagine your company runs a customer satisfaction survey and collects 200 total responses. Out of these, you receive 20 responses for 0 through 6 combined (detractors), 40 responses for 7 and 8 combined (passives), and 140 responses for 9 and 10 combined (promoters). First, determine the percentage of promoters: (140 / 200) * 100 = 70%. Next, determine the percentage of detractors: (20 / 200) * 100 = 10%. Subtract the detractor percentage from the promoter percentage (70% - 10%) to get your final Net Promoter Score of 60.

Best Practices for Measuring NPS

Always track your NPS consistently over time rather than focusing on a single survey wave, as trend analysis reveals the true impact of product updates or service changes. Avoid surveying the exact same users too frequently to prevent survey fatigue, which can skew your results toward artificially negative ratings.

FAQs

Who are the promoters?

Promoters are your most loyal and enthusiastic customers who give a rating of 9 or 10. They are likely to keep buying from you, recommend your brand to others, and act as organic advocates for your business growth.

Who are the demoters?

Often referred to as detractors, these are unhappy customers who respond with a score between 0 and 6. They are vulnerable to churning and can potentially damage your brand reputation through negative word-of-mouth.

Is NPS a good metric to measure user happiness?

Yes, NPS is a widely trusted benchmark for gauging overall customer sentiment and loyalty. While it does not explain the exact root cause of a specific user issue, it serves as a powerful high-level indicator of long-term customer retention and satisfaction.

What is the NPS score if there are the same number of good and bad responses?

If the total percentage of promoters (scores 9-10) exactly equals the total percentage of detractors (scores 0-6), your Net Promoter Score will be precisely 0. This means your brand has an equal balance of passionate advocates and dissatisfied critics.
