Quarantine Silver Lining Calculator

This calculator relies on a series of deterministic formulas to contrast your active lifestyle metrics before and during lockdown. First, your daily commute time is computed using distance and average car speed: commute_time = distance * 3.6 / average_car_speed. This feeds directly into cumulative time savings over the duration of the lockdown.

Financial savings combine vehicle operation costs (fuel efficiency and gas prices), public transit expenses, and lifestyle shifts like home-cooked versus restaurant lunches. Environmental benefits are measured by converting reduced fuel burn into avoided carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, which are further contextualized using equivalent tree absorption metrics.

Imagine a 30-day lockdown period where you completely eliminate your daily driving commute. Suppose your round-trip distance is 20 kilometers, driven 5 days a week at an average speed of 40 km/h. Your daily commute time equals 20 * 3.6 / 40 = 1.8 hours (or 108 minutes). Over 30 days, factoring in the weekly frequency ratio, your total time saved reaches approximately 38.5 hours.

Concurrently, if your car consumes 7 liters per 100 km with gasoline priced at $1.50 per liter, your fuel savings combined with reduced dining out (shifting from buying $12.75 restaurant lunches to $3 home lunches) might yield over $450 in total monetary savings, alongside an emissions reduction equivalent to planting several mature trees.

To get the most accurate results from your simulation, ensure your fuel economy and local gas prices reflect actual historical averages during your specific lockdown timeframe. Be precise when counting weekly commute days to prevent overestimating remote work consistency. Finally, use the breakdown options to distinguish between direct financial savings and indirect environmental milestones.
