Let us calculate the required bag size for a rectangular trash bin that measures 12 inches long, 8 inches wide, and 22 inches high, with a standard 3-inch overhang to secure the liner over the rim.

First, calculate the bag width by adding the length and width together: 12 + 8 = 20 inches wide. Next, calculate the bag height by adding the bin height, the overhang, and one-quarter of the perimeter sum: 22 (height) + 3 (overhang) + (20 / 4) = 22 + 3 + 5 = 30 inches high. Therefore, you need a garbage bag that measures at least 20 inches wide by 30 inches high.

Always factor in an extra 2 to 4 inches of overhang so the bag can fold securely over the rim and stay anchored under its own weight. If your trash frequently includes bulky or sharp items, round your calculated dimensions up to the next commercially available size to prevent tearing. Additionally, match the gauge (thickness) of the bag to your waste type—light office paper requires far less plastic thickness than heavy kitchen refuse.
