Compost Calculator

The calculator relies on fundamental spatial and material formulas to determine your requirements. First, it computes the surface area by multiplying your project's length by its width (Area = Length * Width). Next, it determines the total volume by multiplying that surface area by your desired application depth (Volume = Area * Depth). Finally, it estimates the total material weight by multiplying the calculated volume by the density of the compost, and figures out the budget by multiplying the volume by the unit price (Cost = Price * Volume, Total Weight = Density * Volume).

Imagine you are preparing a new vegetable garden bed that measures 20 feet long by 10 feet wide, and you want to apply a rich compost layer 0.25 feet (3 inches) deep. First, calculate the area: 20 ft * 10 ft = 200 square feet. Second, calculate the volume: 200 sq ft * 0.25 ft = 50 cubic feet of compost. If your local supplier charges $2.50 per cubic foot, your total cost will be 50 * $2.50 = $125.00. Assuming a standard moist compost density of 40 pounds per cubic foot, the total weight of your order will be 50 * 40 = 2,000 pounds.

Always measure your plot multiple times to account for irregular borders or slope variations. It is wise to add a 5% to 10% volume buffer to your final calculation to account for settling, compaction, and spillage during application. When sourcing material, verify whether your supplier sells by the cubic yard or cubic foot to ensure your unit price inputs align correctly with the calculator.
